Fair Use Doctrine

The fair use doctrine of copyright law governs the non-infringing use of copyrighted works for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research. In order to determine whether the use of a copyrighted work is a fair use, four factors are generally considered: (1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes; (2) the nature of the copyrighted work; (3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and (4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

If you are quoting my work, please limit your quotation to small quotes that retain the context of the idea being transmitted. Please use the citation style most appropriate to your discipline (such as AP, APA, MLA, CSE, Chicago, or similar style guide.)

If you are using my work as part of hard-copy teaching materials, please include my name, date of publication, and the URL of the original article on this website.

If you are using my work as part of soft-copy teaching materials, please let me know so I can track the reach of my work.

Uses Not Covered by Fair Use Doctrine

If you wish to include my work in a physically or electronically published manuscript (such as a collection, anthology, journal, or other larger work), please contact me as soon as possible so that we can discuss the terms under which a license may be granted.
